Intuitive eating is an approach developed to help people heal from the side effects of chronic dieting. What is an intuitive eater? An intuitive eater is defined as a person who “makes food choices without experiencing guilt or an ethical dilemma, honors hunger, respects fullness and enjoys the pleasure of eating.” -Be Nourished Why did I switch to Intuitive Eating and what has been my experience? I struggled with my diet my whole life. As a young girl I was severely overweight which led to a drastic change in my diet pushing me to the verge of anorexia nervosa. After being on both ends of the spectrum-- heavily eating vs. eating nothing, I knew I had to make a change. I tweedled with IIFYM for a few months before becoming extremely obsessed with counting calories and even more obsessed when I messed up or did not see results. Then it was back to not eating. Truthfully , it wasn't until I changed my mindset (food is fuel )and became educated on the nutritional factors of food (other than their kcal) that I began eating intuitively. I had to let go of my fear of weight gain. I had to let go my “restrictions”. I had to let go of my rules. I had to let go of numbers. I had to start listening to my body, learning when I was hungry, when I was full. Something I had always relied on numbers to do. I had to stop classifying food as good or bad, but rather more/less nutritionally dense.. All of this has helped me recover my relationship with food. For some in the fitness industry, food is not a problem. They can tweak their diets by restricting certain foods, eating more of one type of food, cutting nutrients etc. I, just could not do it and I- know that I’m not alone. According to Be Nourished, a website designed to help people heal the dieting mind, “People who repeatedly diet often experience a “diet backlash” – Which causes:
What this means is, those of us who tend to diet, often get into unrealistic relationships with food which are not sustainable, leading to “diet backlash”. Intuitive eating helped me recover my relationship with food, and it can help you too!
